You can lodge a passport application over the holiday period at Australia Post in the usual way. Make sure to check Australia Post’s holiday operating hours.
Over the Christmas/New Year’s period, passport offices will operate as follows:

On reduced service days:
- You will only be able to lodge a passport application at the passport office if:
- you need a passport in less than two business days for a compassionate or compelling reason, such as the death or serious illness of an immediate family member or an unexpected need for urgent business travel, and
- you have called us on 131 232 to make an appointment.
- You can collect your passport if:
- you need a passport in less than two business days for a compassionate or compelling reason, such as the death or serious illness of an immediate family member or an unexpected need for urgent business travel, and
- you have received email notification of its completion and you have requested that it be collected from one of our offices.
On closed days:
- All passport offices will be closed.
- The department can provide urgent passport assistance in accordance with the Consular Services Charter.
Notarial services
- You must have an appointment to lodge documents for legalisation – appointments can be made via the Smartraveller website. If you require assistance please email [email protected].
- Collection of notarised documents completed after Friday 24 December will only be available for pick up from Tuesday 4 January 2022. All other requests will be returned via self-provided return envelope.
